Social Conditions
Throughout and before the Civil War, the South's economy and social standings weren't good. For education, any African Americans weren't being educated, and the whites went to school, but the experience wasn't very good. They didn't have many teachers that were very educated. For employment, slaves were used on plantations, women did work around the house, and white men were either plantation workers or worked with construction/engineering. Slavery was taking over the economy before the war. During the war, you were either at battle as a soldier, or a slave working to harvest cotton. Because we had much debt, the African Americans who weren't fighting were working extra hard to get the profit from exports. Also because of the debt, sickness and health were a big issue. The fact that we didn't have the money to get medication meant that there was a lot of sickness and disease. After the war, we had so much debt that we didn't back on track until we joined back together with the North. Once we were one country again, the government helped us get back on track and our social condition gradually improved.
