Republicans
Pictured Left: Wade-Davis Bill. A Radical Republican was a Republican who was in favor of emancipation and equal treatment of the Freedmen during and after the Civil War. Radical Republicans were a small faction of people in the original Republican party. The Republican party was started in 1854, and they began opposing the Kansas Nebraska Act, which gave the possibility of increasing slavery, due to popular sovereignty. The first Republican president was Abraham Lincoln. (1861 - 1865). The Radical Republicans had problems with Abraham Lincoln. However, they also liked a few of his policies. They believed that he was to lenient on the Confederacy. They also believed that he was not taking fast steps toward emancipation and a quicker end of the war. Congress passed the Wade- Davis Bill, which the President vetoed. This bill stated that 50% of the states' white males would take a loyalty oath to be readmitted to the Union and slavery would be permanently abolished. (Lincoln later suggested the 10% Plan which required 10% of the white males to take the oath). When Johnson took office, they first supported him, but then he turned out to carry out Lincoln's policies. In the Election of 1866 (for Congress), Johnson planned to support the Democrats, which did not prove to be a success. A republican got elected by a much greater amount, causing Johnson to not be able to veto him. The Republicans now had major control over Congress. The Radicals then planned to impeach President Johnson, but failed, for he escaped being impeached by only one vote. President Johnson vetoed 21 bills, and Congress overrode 15 of them, including the Reconstruction Acts and the Force Acts. When Grant was elected into office in 1869, he carried out the Radicals' ideas, and signed the Civil Rights Act of 1871 into law (The third Klu Klux Klan Act). When the country went into the Great Depression, the Democrats came back into power, ending the rule of the Radical Republicans.
Democrats
Pictured Left: Democrats Logo. Democrats are a specific people group who have almost opposite beliefs of Republicans. Democrats believe that they are greater together than when they are on their own. They also believe that a country succeeds when everyone gets a fair shot, when everyone gets a fair share, and when everyone plays by the same rules. Democrats want to build a stronger economy and enforce more job creation. They also favor minimum wage and like the idea of having higher tax rates for higher income brackets. Democrats are open to new opinions and different ideas.
Klu Klux Klan
Pictured Left: A KKK Organizing. With the Grand Wizard and other main leaders in the middle. The Klu Klux Klan was an terrorist army consisting of White sheriffs, mayors, judges, ordinary citizens all over the South. They systematically murdered black politicians and whipped and beat black citizens. They all killed blacks for having jobs that whites wanted and reasons like that.
A few governments fought back, thankfully. In Tennessee, Arkansas and Texas policemen arrested Klan members that carried out executions. The federal government's empowered federal authorities with the Enforcement Acts of 1870 and 1871.
The Enforcement acts were there to prohibit the attacks of Klu Klux Klan. The criminal codes allowed blacks to keep their rights, jobs etc.
